Weekly Brief

A large task force of at least eight warships was present at an amphibious landing exercise at Kaliningrad on August 11. This task force, from a naval point of view, trained in interoperability and supporting amphibious landing vessels with shore bombardment and mine clearing operations.

Ivan Grenn landing vessel RFS Pyotr Morgunov reentered the Baltic Sea due the exact reasons for her return remain unknown. The vessel most likely will pick up the Northern Fleet marines and their heavy equipment and transport them back to their base.

Daily Events

August 10

Ivan Grenn class landing ship RFS Pyotr Morgunov passed through the Oresund during the early morning and headed into the Baltic Sea [1].

August 11

As part of the their bilateral training exercise, around 100 marines of the Baltic and Northern Fleets performed an amphibious landing at the Khmelevka training ground in the Kaliningrad Region. The marines were embarked on the Ropucha class LST RFS Minsk and the Zubr class hovercrafts RFS Evgeny Kocheshkov and RFS Mordovia. All forces embarked at Baltiysk and took the fastest route possible to the landing beach. Su-30SM fighters and Su-24 bombers provided air support during the landing phase [2].

Three Steregushchy class corvettes and two Sonya class minesweepers were present at this exercise and provided close support for the amphibious landing. Three of these vessels were identified by their hull numbers as the RFS Steregushchy, RFS Soobrazitelny and RFS Novocheboksarsk [3].

August 13

Ropucha class landing ships RFS Olenegorsky Gornyak was reported at 5 nautical miles from the Latvian territorial waters [4].

Tugs Nina Sokolova and MB-96 delivered the floating crane SPK-50160 to Baltiysk around 0900Z. The Nina Sokolova then headed back to Lomonsov [5]

August 14

Ka-27PL anti-submarine helicopters trained over the Baltic Sea in how to detect and track submarines and engage them with several weapon systems. The helicopters also used P-50T bombs during this training [6].
