Weekly Brief

The focus during this week lay in both anti-submarine warfare by specialized corvettes and naval aviation with an anti-submarine exercise taking place in the Sea of Okhotsk, the bastion area of the Pacific Fleet.
The crews of the vessels which took part in the large naval exercise near Hawaii underwent training in fire fighting and damage control. These are vital tasks that have to be conducted flawless once vessels are deployed at sea.

Daily Events

July 27
A pair of Tu-142MZ long range anti-submarine aircraft, also known as maritime patrol aircraft, are returning to their airbase following their participation at the Navy Day parade at Saint Petersburg. The return flight will be over 8.000 kilometers and will be done without refueling [1].

Recently graduated pilots flying MiG-31BM interceptor aircraft for the Pacific Fleet Naval Aviation have started training in adverse weather conditions. The training involves take offs and landings as well as searching for enemy aircraft during bad weather [2].

July 30
Grisha class anti-submarine vessels RFS Ust-Ilimsk and RFS Kholmsk held an anti-submarine exercise in the Sea of Okhotsk near the coast of Kamchatka. The role of the simulated hostile submarine was played by a nuclear power submarine of the Pacific Fleet, though the name of the ship was not reported. The corvettes operated together with aircraft of the Pacific Fleet Naval Aviation and coordinated with their own ship-borne Ka-27PL anti-submarine warfare helicopters. Once detected, a target solution for the rocket propelled depth charges and torpedoes was worked out.
Both vessels also held communication and damage control exercises during their deployment [3].

July 31
Il-38N maritime patrol aircraft of the Pacific Fleet have returned to their home airfields following their participation in the Navy Day parade in Saint Petersburg on July 25. The flight took part in two stages, with a landing at Kansk for refueling [4].

Aug 01
Damage control exercises were held at the naval base of Vladivostok with ship crews training to assemble and equip fire-fighting teams, seal of burning compartments and repair structural damage. The vessels involved in the exercises were Udaloy class destroyers RFS Admiral Tributs, RFS Admiral Panteleev, Stereguschy class corvettes RFS Aldar Tsydenzhapov and RFS Sovershenny as wall as the control and measuring vessel RFS Marshal Krylov [5].
All these vessels were recently involved in a large scale naval exercise near Hawaii.
